Continuing the Western theme in South Dade, today Michelle Davis, Mark Berney and I found an Ash-throated Flycatcher along 9336 near the turn-off to Lucky Hammock and Southern Glades Environmental and Wildlife Area. We first saw the bird on the north side of 9336 but it later settled in the small hardwood hammock at the corner of Aerojet Road and 9336. It went to the fence many times, grabbed a bug, and then retreated to the edge of the hammock, calling periodically with single "kirp" calls. I'm sure others will get much better photos.

Also in the area were 9 Swainson's, 2 Red-shouldered and a Krider-like Red-tailed Hawk with a white tail, white wing linings and no perceptible belly markings. Four Scissor-tailed Flycatchers were nearby and a Lark Sparrow was along the fence line on the north side of 9336. The Vermilion Flycatcher was at its usual spot but the Western Kingbird was missing at that time.

In ENP, I located a Brown-crested Flycatcher along the Royal Palm road, 100 yards north of the turn-off to Research Road. It was .7 miles from the one we had last Friday, so I'm not positive that it's a second bird. However, that area usually supports 2 wintering Brown-crested Flycatchers.
