Yesterday, August 6th, on our way to the Palm Beach sod farms, Joe Bozzo and I stopped at a flooded farm field near the intersection of Oil Well Grade Rd. and CR858 aka Oil Well Rd. in eastern Collier County. Not as good as the same habitat in Palm Beach County, but probably THE best such habitat in Collier County, we found a rich diversity of shorebirds, waders, ducks, etc. There were scores of Stilt & Pectoral Sandpipers, hundreds of Least Sandpipers, Semipalmated Sandpipers (not as many), Killdeer, as well as other shorebirds. There were 25+ Wood Ducks, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks and dozens of Mottled Ducks; 20+ Roseate Spoonbills; numerous Snowy & Great Egrets, plus a few Black-crowned Night-Herons, Great Blue Herons, Common Moorhens; a pair of Sandhill Cranes as well as other species. The only record I know in recent years for Upland Sandpiper in Collier County was seen very near this area on a sod farm so I'm hoping to add that species with a little luck. I'm planning on going back there later today when the light is better. I'm hoping to add something new to my collier county Big Year such as Black or Gull-billed Tern, Wilson's Phalarope, etc. Stay tuned . . . .
