Four Palm Beach birders Chuck Weber, Al Pelligrinelli and my wife and I decided to participate in the June challenge. We had almost no outside help. We had a very enjoyable time and whoever had the idea is to be congratulated. We were pleased to confirm two new breeding species for our county, Red eyed Vireo and Oystercatcher. We were also able to re-confirm nesting of Cliff and Barn swallows. Although seen once again we were not able to confirm nesting Orchard Orioles and Indigo Buntings. The prognosis on three species Spot breasted Oriole, Smooth billed Ani and Scrub Jay is very dire. Next year or two could probably see them gone. The most surprising find was by the ever vigilant Chuck whilst on his morning walk he video taped a Palm Warbler. Al also found a La Sagras Flycatcher and between us we found 17 species of shore birds. On a personal note, although a doddering 73 year old I found 128 species and heard 3 others. Having no boat available and weather that didn't co-operate we have no pelagic species but we wish to congratulate Miami-Dade on their fantastic haul. Regarding David Simpson's remarks about me and Palm Beach County. I will admit that David contacted me by e-mail on the 27th June
judge for yourselves who was asleep at the wheel. In due course we will forward a list of birds but right now we are busy on the 2nd day of our latest challenge. Our final total is 137 plus 3 heard. Brian Hope
