Albert "Al" B. Tross (Toe) and Harold P. Trill (Brian) set out this morning in search of Black-whiskered Vireo and Mangrove Cuckoo for the June Challenge. We started out early at the old Burger King property but failed to find either species. From there, we proceeded to the Deering Canoe Launch at ~173 St, where the best sighting were two Yellow-crowned Night-Herons that perched on a snag. Not wanting to give up, we headed to Black Point and checked out the jetty parking lot. We heard, and I briefly saw, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. As we headed towards 248 St. to look for stuff by the landfill, we stopped at the point where the marina parking lot ends at 248 st. and heard a Mangrove Cuckoo calling from a little north of us. It flew right in front of us to a casuarina, then flew to a small tree in the parking lot and proceeded to call. It gave us crippling looks. We later heard at least 3 other Mangrove Cuckoos in this area.
