Twenty-three old and new birders joined me yesterday for the TAS Birdwalk to both Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden & Matheson Hammock. It was a warm Spring day and the second day of the TAS Bird-A-Thon. We started out our day in Fairchild moving along the Kushlan Bird Trail and wandering in and out of the Bird Zones . The warblers were in very low numbers with one particular tree, a black olive being the warbler magnet for the morning with Northern Parula, American Redstart, and Prairie Warbler seeming to concentrate their activities to this tree. Also active in the same tree were Painted Buntings, Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
The list for fairchild included:
Pied-billed Grebe
Great Egret
Great Blue Heron
Tricolored Heron
White Ibis
Blue-winged Teal
Turkey Vulture
Black Vulture
Merlin
Red-shouldered Hawk
Common Moorhen
American Coot
Mourning Dove
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Blue Jay
Fish Crow
Northern Mockingbird
Gray Catbird
Hill Myna
European Starling
Northern Parula
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
American Redstart
Northern Cardinal
Painted Bunting
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Boat-tailed Grackle
Leaving Fairchild a Merlin cruised by and our raptors continued in Matheson where we added American Kestral, Broad-winged Hawk, Swallow-tailed Kite and also Chimney Swift and Pileated Woodpecker. The Hammock remained quiet.
