On Saturday, we birded the Kissimmee Lake area with Toe and Bill B. We started at 3 Lakes WMA, where our highlights were very close looks at a Red-cockaded Woodpecker and a cooperative Bachman's Sparrow. From there, we went to Joe Overstreet Landing, which was fairly quiet. There was a Crested Caracara, and a woman who we spoke to told us she had just seen an oriole behind the bathrooms (we couldn't locate it).
Finally, we headed to Lake Kissimmee State Park, in hopes of finding a Hairy Woodpecker. On our way in, eagle-eyed (or owl-eyed, in this case) Toe spotted a Great Horned Owl perched in a tree. As we watched, it swooped down and picked up a snake. It returned to its perch before flying off. Later, we ran into Roxanne and Jeanette, who had just seen a Hairy Woodpecker. They were nice enough to played the call for us in the area where they had seen the Hairy, but we had no luck. We were slightly consoled by seeing a Carolina Chickadee and hearing another Bachman's Sparrow singing.
All in all, lots of fun!
