As I mentioned in my post to FLORIDABIRDS, etc., I've made nearly 15 trips to STA-5 starting in last December, the last one being this past Sunday and have never once been told that STA-5 was "off limits" to the general public. I've talked to no less than 8 different SFWMD employees while at STA-5 as well as a Florida Fish & Wildlife ranger/warden/official this past Thursday (while standing on the dikes and looking at the birds with my scope, etc.) and all have told me that it is OK to be there birding as long as one walks on the dikes and does not drive. In fact, as others who have been with me can attest, these SFWMD employees are VERY eager to see and learn about the birds that are there at STA-5 and love looking through spotting scopes at them. It was the same for the Florida Fish and Game person. So why all of a sudden comes this ban on birders being there?
I tried calling the the phone numbers you (Doug Suitor) provided. The 1-561-682-2773 for Fred Davis was picked up by an answering machine (not Fred Davis') and although I left a message, I've yet to hear from that individual. A call to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-954-746-1789 did result in a returned call but the biologist who replied could not provide any rationale for the banning of STA-5 to the public. He also stated that this property and the rules/regulations for entrance to it are controlled entirely by SFWMD so he didn't have much to offer either. . . .

: Hello folks,

: Wesylin Strickland called me this morning to tell me that She and Henry had been turned away at the gate of STA-5 by South Florida Water Management District Staff. They were that told that the area is off limits and no one is allowed past the gates. They were told to
: contact Fred Davis at 1-561-682-2773 to comment or question the closing. It may also be good to call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-954-746-1789.

: Has anyone else run into SFWMD or FWCC staff out there? Might be a good idea to make a couple phone calls.
