Although I don't remember seeing viewing instructions posted here, the expectation was that folks would view the blackbird/cowbird flocks from outside the yellow fence beside the public road. If they are feeding on the mounds behind the silos then a scope is definitely a requirement. Also the site is best visited in the late afternoon to benefit from the better lighting conditions.

Kudos for actually asking for permission first. Others might risk trespassing and giving birders a bad reputation. But as you probably experienced, going onto the Sem-chi property is more trouble than it is worth and is best avoided.
