This is pretty far out there, but I wonder if there's a second La Sagra's Flycatcher in Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP. This morning while surveying south of the administration building, I first heard, then saw a La Sagra's Flycatcher. I watched it from 8:23-8:35, and left it when I continued walking south. What caught my attention was the vocalization; slightly different from that of the bird along the Nature Trail and Bike Path. It gave 12 double-note "wheet" calls, with only 1 single-note call. In reviewing my digibinned photo, it seems like the base of the bill is somewhat light and the yellow wash is slightly stronger. However, these marks are subtle and perhaps a function of lighting.
When Ed Hopkins and I met up at the white gate later, he told me that he saw the La Sagra's close by and in the open at 8:45. Using a Google Map image, it means that the bird had to leave my area and fly >340 yards NW in a straight line in order to be at the gate when Ed saw it. This certainly is possible but not the pattern of this bird's behavior. It sort of strolls off (its version of strolling!) and hangs out in the immediate area for a while. At 9:20 it reappeared near the gate and we had excellent views. It called ~8 times, only with single-note calls.
Very interesting, especially the vocalizations. Thoughts and comments, anyone?
Birds were active this morning, taking leaf baths and singing whisper songs. A Yellow Palm Warbler was along the south part of the path. Two White-crowned Pigeons flew over the path while we watched the flycatcher.
