Today, I birded several locations in Palm Beach County for the first time, including the recently opened Wellington Environmental Preserve, which is just east of STA-1E. What an amazing place! The preserve includes 2.5 miles of paved trails and boardwalks, plus an incredible six-story observation tower! I was hoping to find the Canvasbacks reported by Brian Hope; I saw five (one male and four females). Much like STA-5, this place is also wall-to-wall Limpkins! Other species of note included Northern Pintail and Snail Kite.
To reach the preserve (the full name is Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat), exit Florida's Turnpike at Southern Boulevard (SR 80) and drive west 8 miles to Flying Cow Road. Turn left and drive south 3.5 miles to the parking area.
Other places visited today included Riverbend Park on Indiantown Road in Jupiter, Peaceful Waters Wetlands at Wellington Village Park and the Hillsboro Recreation Area entrance to Loxahatchee NWR at the end of Loxahatchee Road. My day list included:
