Hi birders: Another follow-up on the White cheeked Pintail. Several birders were also present at Grassy Waters on Saturday, looking for the bird. There were no sightings from 7:30 a.m. till at least 2:30 p.m.
Interestingly, due to the actions of a friendly resident, two of us, who were there at a particular moment, were approached, and, ultimately, were granted access to the Ibis gated community which abuts the reserve. This is a great habitat for this bird, and it has been sighted here as well, but no joy on this day.
I would definitely not approach this community, as it is very heavily guarded, and does not look all that welcoming, but, if you hang out at the reserve long enough without seeing the bird, you may be approached by a curious resident, who can arrange access for you. This is the second time this has happened to me.
The pintail obviously does patronize the reserve, but the parts that are visible from the road/sidewalk are severely limited, and it is defintely hit or miss; ( mostly miss ).
I probably will try again tomorrow, later in the day, as I will be in the area. Good luck, Thor
