After running some errands around Miami, I booked it to Everglades National Park in hopes of nocturnal birds near Flamingo, specifically rails. A stop by the Lucky Hammock fields yielded Grasshopper Sparrows along with Savannah Sparrows and several Coot Bay CBC members.
My next stop was West Lake in hopes of seeing the Redhead seen this morning on the CBC, but the only ducks I saw in the late afternoon were two Blue-winged Teal and a female Northern Pintail, which all took off fifteen minutes after my arrival. Looks like the ducks may be moving on.
Along the Coastal Prairie Trail, I missed Black Rail, but had Clapper Rail, Barred Owl and Whip-poor-will along Campground C (right before the trail), one Lesser Nighthawk on the north side of the trail, Sedge and Marsh Wrens, and many Savannah, two Swamp Sparrows and Nelson's Sparrows. There were also both panther tracks and bobcat/young panther tracks in separate locations.
A Barn Owl and both night-herons were near the small bridge along the main road right before entering Flamingo. Snakes on the road included Florida Banded Water Snakes, Eastern Garter Snakes, Yellow Ratsnakes, and Florida Cottonmouths, the majority run over. Be mindful that snakes are abundant on roads the first one to two hours after dark.
I look forward to seeing some of you for the TAS North Florida Trip later this month. I head back towards school tomorrow afternoon.
Best regards,
Alex
