This morning, I visited the Gate 15 area, hoping to see the Masked Duck reported yesterday. A female Ruddy Duck was feeding in the marsh to the north of the mound. This bird was very buffy in the face, which initially puzzled me. Larry Manfredi, who arrived a few minutes after I spotted the bird, told me that he saw a Ruddy last week at West Lake with similar features.

A male Redhead was in the marsh on the south side of the mound, as was a female Snail Kite. Least Bitterns were calling at various locations around the mound and an American Bittern flew over us while we were scanning the south side. Other birds in the area included Hooded Mergansers on both sides of the mound, Ring-necked Ducks on the south side and a Roseate Spoonbill and Long-billed Dowitchers on the north side.
