I took a visitor today to Joe Overstreet Rd looking for Whooping Cranes. No cranes, but I was flabbergasted by the fact that we had a fall color show. Along the turnpike north of Ft. Pierce, all along Canoe Creek Rd, and east along Rt 60 toward Vero. Not just the occasional colored tree I was used to seeing after 40 years in Florida, but swaths of trees in deep red, scarlet and yellow. It was like driving in the North Carolina Piedmont. The reds were Red Maple. The yellows, I suppose were Florida Maple with a Silver Maple-like leaf. I hope this becomes a regular thing here, and was not just the result of a flukey fall.
