Toe called me and-knowing I needed Horned Grebe for the county-told me he was looking at one "right now" at scope-distance, from the kayak launch at Old Cutler Rd & 173rd. I jumped in my car and started to drive over from Coral Gables, hoping to get there while there was still light. About 3/4 of the way, Toe called me to say they had disappeared. I gently reminded Toe that I would have to go to his house and throw down if the grebe wasn't there....
At the launch, I set up the scope in the area where they had been seen. Nada.
I then started scanning to the south, and soon found 2 Horned Grebes about 100-200 yards offshore, feeding and frequently diving. As Toe described, they still retain most of their alternate plumage. They were moving further out and north as I left.
Thanks, Toe. A St. Peter's Cream Stout was enjoyed in your honor!
