Because of predators I set up my feeder and photo blind in dense cover with a alcove giving the birds access to flee to cover. The native vegetation of blolly, stopper and some tall coffee give over head protection. The open feeders in the yard are filled once a month. My bunting feeder is filled daily.
As for cats, well, the feeder is adjacent to my office window which has no screens so that I can photograph....and other things. Cats are quick learners. I now have 6 male and 10 female buntings one very aggravating redstart that I simply can't "capture" since it is so fast, one catbird a brown thrasher and a mockingbird that gorges itself on torchwood berries. What a great source of food that plant is for birds.
