My house is a 2-story with parking & shop underneath, so my bird feeders are about 15-18 feet off the ground mounted in oak trees. The small-bird feeders are the cage-type that only allows buntings and an occasional cardinal or warbler in with total protection. I fill the feeders by lowering them on a rope & pulley system I rigged up in the trees. This way I can enjoy them at eye level. I do have some cats, but all but one are old, slow & sluggish and they are kept indoors every night. They are only let out after being well-fed, and then like to come in the house for protection...I've lost cats due to feral dogs & maybe a coyote or two I rarely see out where I live.
I noticed my buntings disappearing the last few weeks when the weather was warmer. I'll observe feeder activity as cooler weather moves in....maybe my buntings will return.
