Racing in front of the rain-showers moving across the state, I was able to reach Windley Key at 3:30 p.m. and located the Western Spindalis about 4 p.m. feeding above the quarry wall on the purple fruit of the Lantana involucrate. It was feeding in the company of a Gray Catbird. Look for any movement in the Lantana.
It was great to see the quarry that John B. Orr Construction quarried the keystone that was used to build such venerable architectural landmarks as Viscaya, the Dade County Courthouse and Hialeah Racetrack.
When deciding upon a watering hole to quaff a celebratory libation, the Caribbean Club in Key Largo, birthplace of the film classic of the same name, was any easy first choice. My last stop here was in 1996, after seeing a Great Cormorant below the old Bahia Honda Bridge. I blended in well with the spirits of Bogie and Bacall, parrotheads, street urchins and bikers, as I hoisted a Newcastle Ale. Life is good…………………living in the tropics.
