Yesterday, Larry sent me photos of a Thick-billed Vireo found by an out-of-state birder on Saturday. This morning I relocated the bird at 7:30 near the same area where it was first seen.
Directions: Take Rickenbacker Causeway ($1 toll) to Key Biscayne and enter the Crandon North Beach entrance. Go to the north end of the parking lot where the nature center is located. Take the paved path on the east side of the nature center and look for a butterfly garden looking area beyond the path. Past the garden, take the Bear Cut Nature Trail north until it switches back south and look for trail marker 15. After this marker, the trail will link with a bike path. Take the bike path north ~125 ft and look for a sea grape on the rigth before the path curves right. I saw the vireo in this area. A Prairie Warbler was associating with the vireo. There was also an adult White-eye Vireo in the area this morning, so be sure to look for the bird with a more uniform dingy yellow underside as opposed to the contrasting white/yellow of the white-eyed. With good views, all the field marks of the Thick-billed will be obvious. I did not hear it call, though. On Saturday the bird was found in the area of markers 14 and 15. The bird was moving in that direction when I last saw it this morning. I spent another 2 hours after first seeing trying to relocate it for a photo but never managed to get a shot. If I can I will return tomorrow for a photo.
Other than the birds mentioned above, I only saw a Chuck-will's Widow, some woodpeckers, a cardinal, and a few Catbirds.
