Sorry Steve- it's not just computer abbreviation jargon, it's a standardized 4-letter code for identifying birds. Banders use it in note taking, and it's what I was required to use when working and conducting point counts. I hear your plea, but at the same time, it's not like we're using them at first mention of a bird...it usually follows after the bird has been mentioned in full.
