Hey All
Just a few thoughts on the RHWO @ Corbett
I had a few reports from FWC Law Enforcement and fellow co-workers that birders/photographers are entering Corbett where the RHWO nest tree is located and possibly getting too close to the nest tree.
Here are the problems with this:
First, It is illegal to enter Corbett from any other location than the two designated entrances - South at the end of Seminole Pratt and North from the Bee line. So by sitting by the nest tree you are actually breaking the rules and may receive a fine from FWC Law Enforcement.
Second, if you are going to enter Corbett you have to pay the entrance fee - it's only $3 per person or $6 per car. If you are going to stay on the road by the nest tree (which I recommend) you do not have to pay an entrance fee.
Third, and MOST IMPORTANT you must stay a reasonable distance away from the nest tree. This is not a protected species in Florida but this is obviously not a common occurrence in S. FL so give the birds some respect. By staying on the road you can watch them fly across every 60 secs or so and get a decent view of the nest tree without disturbing the pair.
I know the first two parts of this message are pretty nit-picky but they are the rules.
PLEASE don't make me regret posting this sighting.
I really appreciate your cooperation!
Enjoy those beautiful RHWOs
