We have had Painted Buntings in our yard all winter as well. There have been more recently, mostly females, and we've had several male Indigo Buntings in the last week.

The other evening I noticed interesting behavior from a male Painted Bunting I thought I would share. Our bird feeders were empty at the time but a male bunting came to our Coral Honeysuckle and picked off one of the tube petals and began chewing/sucking the end of it for a few seconds, then dropped it. Then he did it again, and again, until the flower was left with only one tubular petal part. Then he went to another flower. It wasn't hard to notice that many of the flowers were left with only one tubular petal part. Once I filled the feeders he went back to eating seed. Who knew?
