These birds were most probably part of a wave of migrants that were brought down by the storms in the early morning hours. Lots of nocturnal migrants took to the wing last night. We noted separate waves of returns moving at different speeds on radar which usually indicates diversity within the group of birds moving. Some birds made into the Miami radar early in the night, these returns may have been shorebirds as they fly faster and cover more ground. Songbirds did not seem to make to the mainland till early morning and even the late morning hours as the low temps allow migrants to fly farther.
