I spent the late afternoon and early evening at my second patch, hoping to pick up some nocturnal species. Highlights included a Western Kingbird right at the entrance to Aerojet Road and three Scissor-tailed Flycatchers were hunting on the power lines on the northern edge of the area near the main road.

Two White-tailed Kites were hunting over the fields as dusk fell, with one providing quite a show as it dove consistently into the scrub. At nightfall, Lesser Nighthawks could be seen flying over the pineland but only a single bird flew right over the Lucky Hammock fields and providing good looks.

The best was to come as a series of barking heralded the emergence of a Short-eared Owl, circling around a couple times and then being joined by a second owl. Both birds kept calling ("barking") to each other as they flew toward the north presumably to hunt in the fields on the north side of the main road.
