Early morning birding around the park headquarters netted several warblers: Palm, Prairie, Black-and-White, and American Redstart. We also had mockingbird, cardinal, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Great-crested Flycatcher. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was in the very same tree where I observed him last year...birds are amazing!
Captained by Shelby Moneysmith, Team Arsenicker birded south along Turkey Point and had a lucky look at a nice Yellow Warbler. We circumnavigated several of the Arsenickers and among the numerous Brown Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants we saw several American White Pelicans, Red-breasted Mergansers, Belted Kingfisher, and a couple Great White Herons. Down along Broad Creek we added a Lesser Black-backed Gull to our unusual bird list.
Along the oceanside of Elliott Key we observed small feeding flocks of Sanderling, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, and Short-billed Dowitchers. Several Semipalmated and Black-bellied Plovers were in the mix.
A second Lesser Black-backed Gull greeted us as we pulled into Boca Chita for lunch. Several Northern Rough-winged Swallows flew past the Ragged Keys while we ate on the beach (and turnstones walked around our feet).
As we returned to Convoy Point we were treated to two Sandwich Terns and a Caspian Tern along the jetty. The saltwater Anhinga was in its usual spot along the jetty as well. What a great day in the park! Thanks for the fun time.
