Hello! Despite hordes of seethingly angry mosquitos on Elliott Key, whose buzzing effectively drowned out any bird calls (if any poor birds could survive the onslought - we certainly heard none in the forest, not even a BGGN), participants seem to have had a great time. I'll post the full list in a few days after we finish deciding who counted which cormorants where. The folks on the pelagic assignment had great reports - I'll let Toe report on their exciting finds, it's his thunder and I won't steal it. My team finished the day by going out to Mowry Canal (which is now gated and has a lot less trash once you pass the second gate) and we saw three loggerhead shrikes in one scope view... and red-breasted mergansers swimming next to manatees... and later saw a baby manatee (aww!). Birds on Elliott included spotted sandpiper, ruddy turnstones, semipalmated sandpiper, least sandpiper, belted kingfisher, red-shouldered hawk, black-bellied plover, dunlin, white-crowned pigeon, etc. Team spirit prize goes to Rock Jetty for canoeing the Jones Lagoon in an epic rainstorm... he does it for the data, folks! Join us next year ("the year of the Jetty"), our count keeps getting better and better.
