I think people aren't replying because they have nothing useful to say. You didn't give enough information to make a serious stab at armchair ID (I would start by considering Thayer's, Iceland and Glaucous...as well as sun-bleached Herring). We don't even know what size it was (size can be tricky...were there other birds nearby?)
