Hello fellow birders,
I'll start off by reporting that on Monday, November 30th, I spotted the two Short-eared Owls, reported earlier by Larry Manfredi, standing on the dirt road traversing (east-west) the field directly south of Lucky Hammock. The owls were side-by-side, about two-thirds of the way west along the road. With me was Julie "Eagle Eye", Tricia's sister, who was delighted to see her life Short-eared Owls, illuminated by my truck's headlights, approximately 30 feet away. I'd like to thank the two gentlemen from Melbourne (FL) whose names I didn't catch, for going down the road first, spotting the owls, and passing the knowledge on to us. Also seen in the same field were two White-tailed Kites, one Peregrine Falcon, several Lesser Nighthawks in the distance, at least three Red-shouldered Hawks, and at least a half-dozen Northern Harriers (including the ones in the east field across Aerojet Road). Beautiful and exciting evening.
Now, on to serious business. To celebrate my 10th year of birding in 2010, I am going to attempt a Big Year for the county, the state, North America, and the world. For the last two I'll be shooting for personal best. For the first two I'll be aiming for gold. Anyone who stands in my way, especially Toe, will be sorry...Ha, just kidding. I am looking forward to this personal challenge and invite everyone to join me in what promises to be an excellent birding year (I just feel it, don't you?) I will post weekly updates on the TAS Bird Board and promise to document any rare finds. This coming year I am also hoping to reach 400 species for my Florida life list while I attempt to record over 350 of the state's species for the year. So if you see me out there, with or without my toddler, give me a holler, I'll be glad to tell you how things are going. I look forward to seeing a lot of you guys in the Coot Bay CBC and in my Jan 9 TAS South Dade trip. The Year of The Jetty is coming, like it or not.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Cassin's Kingbird to go see.
Cheers,
RJ
