I've been watching all of the postings and great sightings from Lucky Hammock and decided to take a look for myself this morning. A little before 9 a.m. I had killer looks at a Cassin's Kingbird in my scope. It was perched on the wires about halfway from SR 9336 (the road to Everglades National Park) and Lucky Hammock. I was able to observe the buffy tail tips, contrasting white throat, dark gray head and upper breast, and olive wash on the back. When the bird flew, the contrast between the wings and back was noticeable. There are also at least two Western Kingbirds and two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers in this area. Other decent birds seen in the vicinity of Lucky Hammock included White-tailed Kite, light morph Short-tailed Hawk, Sandhill Cranes, Least Flycatcher, and Orange-crowned and Magnolia Warblers. I did not have as much luck with sparrows as other posters and was able to ID only Savannah Sparrows. Jeanette was also in the area and had a good look at a Yellow-breasted Chat in the bushes directly across the road from Lucky Hammock.
