Are you 100% certain of the ID on these birds? If they are indeed BF Grassquits, I have a theory on how they got there. There is quite a bit of travel between Canada and Cuba, much more than between Cuba/US. There is also quite a bit of smuggling going on out of Cuba, with among other things birds and cigars, so those birds were smuggled. There is no way a group of Black-faced Grassquits would make it to Canada on their own. Totally out of their range, and they are not known to migrate I believe. Those that you saw would not be migrating anywhere. They are probably just roaming, wondering where they are. Perhaps somebody smuggled them from Cuba to Canada, then couldn t get them into the U.S. and released them. Who knows?
Now, if you find a dozen Cohiba Robusto cigars lying around, please let me know!
