That's hardly true Roxanne. Miami-Dade Parks Department recently proposed creating a freshwater wetland at Bill Sadowski Park, which had the approval of South Florida Water Management District to divert water from the C-100 canal into the wetland. We envisioned lots of wading birds and shorebirds, as well as migratory and resident birds, utilizing the area. It would have increased park attendance and could have been a living classroom for children as well. Additionally, it would have returned a small area to what it historically was prior to development, a freshwater wetland.
Instead, the mayor of Palmetto Bay, as well as a number of vocal residents, voted against the project because, in their words, they "didn't want a swamp in their neighborhood."
I applaud the Village of Palmetto Bay in taking on a project that encourages people to plant bird-attracting native plants, but the irony is, well, ironic.
