In keeping with the spirit of scarcity that we've had to deal with this year (remember spring: ug!), there was close to nothing at Cutler Wetlands this afternoon. By contrast, on 7/17/2007 I saw 14 species of shorebird at Cutler. Of course, it's still early, and we could have an influx of birds in the next week, but it just seems like the movie Grounghog Day where I keep reliving the same crappy birding day whether it's winter, spring, summer, and now into the beginning of fall shorebird migration. There are good years, and there are bad years, so 2007 was definitely a good year. Tons of Connecticut Warblers in the spring, Caribbean Vagrants and pelagics in summer, and by early July we had migrants. Some decent birds I saw in early fall 2007 included:
Black Tern 7/14
Pectoral Sandpiper and more 7/17
Wilson's Phalarope 7/28
Upland Sandpiper 7/31
Alder Flycatcher 8/26
Baird's Sandpiper 8/26
Buff-breasted Sandpiper 8/26
Whimbrel 8/29
Long-billed Curlew 8/29
This year, I'd settle for 3 from the list above (except for Upland which I was really lucky to see in the spring). I can't wait for 2010 for I can put 2009 deep, deep in the past memories. This year has really sucked!
