Mayor Carlos Alvarez has released his proposed county budget for 2009-2010, which includes eliminating all full-time naturalist staff from EcoAdventures and closing nature centers, such as Castellow Hammock, A.D. Barnes Sense of Wonder Nature Center, and Bill Sadowski Park. These parks are destined to be closed and left unstaffed. This would mean no programming or fieldtrips, and bird feeders at parks like Castellow Hammock would be empty (therefore, no painted buntings). The natural area at A.D. Barnes may very likely be closed to birders and everyone else.
The only hope of keeping any of these nature centers open and staffed will be to contact the county commissioners before Monday, July 20. If you would like to help, go to www.miamidade.gov, click on County Commissioners, and either phone them, fax them, or email them with your concerns.
