Hi Graham
Burrowing Owls can usually be found along the runways at the Kendall/Tamiami Airport, look for cones if they are still there. The cones usually mark their burrows. Scan the fields for changes in topography; the Owls will make a small mound with the excavated sand. This makes it easier to find burrows that are not marked.
Cave Swallow is pretty easy to get at the 216 exit. One way to view them is to make a left at the first traffic signal after you exit and park along the canal, be very careful when crossing the street as it is the entrance to the Turnpike. They nest under the bridge.
We think a much safer way to see Cave Swallow and still have great views is to watch them from the edge of the canal. We you get off the Turnpike and make the left on to 216 you will come to a traffic signal. Continue past and turn right into the apartment complex, park close to the entrance. Walk west towards the canal and wait; they are usually catching bugs over the water. It is much safer and you will be able to observe the birds with out being worried about crazy drivers.
Good luck on your adventure.
Nature is Awesome
