Went first to SE Regional Library in off of I-75 on Sheridan in hopes of seeing Purple Swamphens. Heavy rains prevented me from birding much there but managed to see 2 Least Bitterns. Very clear views of a bird I have rarely seen. After the rains let up a little, headed nearby to Silver Lakes North Park. No Swamphens again. I heard there were some extermination campaigns but it could also be that the weather wasn't helping and could only bird for about half an hour. Nice park with lots of water and did manage to see:
Purple Martins (adults also feeding young, good thing since I saw plenty of competing Starlings around)
White-Winged Dove
Loggerhead Shrikes (actively hunting dragonflies and one was chasing a Starling)
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Wood Stork
Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron (good views of one of my fave herons)
Osprey
Mottled Duck
Tricolored Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egrey
White Ibis
Moorhen
Anhings
Fish Crow, both Grackles, RW Blackbird, Mockingbirds
Least Tern
Green Heron
Also lots of ferals:
Egyptian Geese (about 10)
Domestic Graylag (colored and white)
Domestic Muscovy
At a nearby park: Domestic Mallard (colored and Pekin)
Will try Markham Park next week for Swamphen, never been to that park.
Before going home went to end of NE 97 St (Miami Shores) overlooking the sea and had:
Magnificent Frigatebird
Brown Pelican
Royal Tern
Sandwich Tern
Anhinga
