I have been watching several nesting couples of yellow-crowned night herons over the last couple of months in a tree next to the 22nd Ave bridge over the Miami River. There were 3 large nests, one with hatchlings, another with 2 or 3 blueish eggs. There always several birds keeping watch.

When I walked by today I was shocked and saddened to see that the whole tree had been cut down, I suppose for some sort of maintenance of the bridge. The tree must have been there for several years. The branches were left on the water and many of the adults were standing on the branches as well as two very young birds. Not sure how the young ones will survive. Not sure to whose attention I can address this story. I have several photos of the birds, their nests and the young chicks in the nest.
