There are two active Burrowing Owl dens at the NE corner of Flamingo Road and SW 26th Street in Davie. One of the dens is by the telephone pole away from the street and the other is right beside SW 26th Street and has a Burrowing Owl warning sign next to the den. The best time to observe them is in the morning or late afternoon. During the heat of the day they are in the dens. Usually you can see two to four of the owls standing by the dens. There are also two inactive dens, one has a warning sign and the other has a PVC roost next to it. The owls nest there annually.
The land that the dens are on is county owned and there are many places to park away from the dens and still get a very good observation of the owls. Last year I saw some ignoramus totally ignore the warning sign and pulled his car right up next to one of the dens to take a close up picture of the owls from his car. Not very smart because it could have collaped the den.
