A futile attempt to avoid getting skunked on warblers late this morning searching for the source of some high pitched chip notes coming from high in an oak tree at Snyder Park turned up a male black backed Western Spindalis. The entrance to Snyder Park is about a block north of the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport Perimeter Road at 3299 SW 4th Avenue directly across from the Broward Sherriff Fire Rescue Station #32. To reach the spot where the bird was first seen bear right into the main portion of the park after passing the entrance station then take the immediate left towards the west then the next left towards the south and park where the road widens for parking after about 150 feet. The bird was first seen in the two-trunked oak tree at the southwest end of this parking area. After about ten minutes the bird flew northeast giving a rapid series of high pitched notes and during the following half hour was heard calling a couple of times from the woods in this direction. The cover is very dense in this part of the park so the bird is probably most easily located by its high pitched notes similar to a Black-and-white Warbler which are often uttered in rapid succession when the bird is in flight. Snyder Park is open from 7 am until dusk seven days a week and there is a one dollar per person entrance fee on weekends.
