Nine birders joined Paul Bithorn and me for our annual spring migration trip to Ft. DeSoto in St. Petersburg. From Tropical Audubon s headquarters at Doc Thomas House, we meandered to the west coast via the back roads of Hendry, Collier and Lee Counties, stopping in the Alva area in Lee County, as well as Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Area and Oscar Scherer State Park, before reaching Ft DeSoto late in the afternoon on Friday. Migrant activity at the fort s hotspots was high, so we spent the next day scouring every corner of the park. By the end of the day, our warbler total alone had reached a highly respectable 24 species! Participants also had excellent opportunities to sharpen their migrant thrush identification skills. On Sunday we visited Sawgrass Lake County Park before returning to the fort a final time. On the way back to Miami, we returned to Babcock-Webb to try for species missed during our visit on Friday.
