The photos I have of the Thick-billed on Boot Key in October 2004 seem to show a fairly uniformly yellowish belly. It might be a lighting effect, but that can be an issue for visuals too.
Given the variety of weird songs the White-eyed Vireos are currently singing (they are mimics), I wouldn't put much weight on the song unless he knows the Thick-billed song.
