Yesterday I saw either a Sharp Shinned or Cooper's hawk atop a fence at the house next door. I can't be certain which it was, because I only got a brief look before it spooked - but it had two mocking birds (mom and dad?) dive-bombing it, as it had their nestling.
I haven't seen either type of hawk since my undgrad days when I took an ornithology course, and after checking maps (Cornell Lab and my Peterson's guide), see that each is supposed to be only a winter resident. Is this the case? Is there anything else that someone can share to possibly help me narrow down which I saw - or if there is one of either known to be around the area of Miami Children's Hospital? Thank you for your help! Either way, it was amazingly cool - the hawk was only 7-8' high on the fence, and I was maybe 10' from it.
