Or look up the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan to see what shorebirds are facing. While I'll agree that other critters depend on this much needed water, there is a lot of habitat for these critters in south Florida. Shorebirds, however, have one spot in Dade County - Cutler Wetlands. They get 50 acres out of the over one million acres in the county, plus the occasional ag field that gets wet. Yeah, I guess I am being selfish and one-track-minded. To think that I'm asking for .00005% of the land in Dade County be adequate for rare, long-distance migrating birds for one month of the year. How could I be so selfish!
As for managing it ourselves. we're working on it.
