Tim,
There are guided birdwalks at Loxahatchee every Wednesday and Saturday morning at 7:30 thru the end of April (and possibly later). I go every Wednesday along with some very friendly and knowledgeable birders. We usually start out looking for "little birds" for about an hour and then walk the Marsh Trail and the LILA area looking for wading and shore birds, raptors, etc. The quantity of birds seems to be down this year (as it is at other places as well in my perception) but the variety is still up there where it has always been. We usually end up seeing 50+ different species each time.
In addition to the "standard" wading birds (herons, egrets, coots, moorhens, gallinules), we've recently seen a pair of snail kites that are almost certainly nesting on-site, two pairs of nesting red-shouldered hawks, roseate spoonbills flying low on the horizon, and a pair of great-horned owls (nesting on-site but not visible to the walking public this year). There are many nesting great-blue herons and anhingas as well.
There are always an assortment of warblers (yellow-rump, palm, prairie, and/or pine), various sparrows, vireos, woodpeckers (downy, red-breasted, and/or pileated), too.
Rick
