Today I had the pleasure to watch a pair of Cooper's Hawks scouting for nest locations in two large ficus trees on the FAU Boca Raton campus. In the first ficus, I only saw the female. She was very vocal and active. She was incessantly hopping from branch to branch and occasionally grabbing at sticks but dropping them after a couple of seconds of fumbling with them. Later on I returned to the area and found her in an adjacent ficus continuing the same routine. This tree had much less foliage and I found the male sitting motionless and quietly on an upper branch. Hopefully they find an acceptable nest location in one of the trees so I can take daily breaks from work to see how they are progressing.
I was able to do this once when I lived on a biological station in Highlands County. The female from that nest didn't appreciate being stared at with binoculars and swooped me a couple of times. I left her alone after that.
