Hi everyone while birding ENP this weekend we observed two Swallow-tailed Kites feeding over the Gumbo Limbo trail and the Anhinga Trail. They were getting really close while feeding on dragonflies and flying insects along the west side of the Anhinga trail. (STKI @ Royal Palm = Happy Tricia) Lots of Black-crowned Night Herons were present at the beginning of the trail giving us awesome looks. We saw and heard two Brown-crested Flycatchers, one at the Annex and the other at Hidden Lake Road, both were very vocal. We had 15 species of Warbler between the Annex and ENP, a singing Brown Thrasher at Flynn's and a beautiful Scissor-tailed Flycatcher at their usual spot along the Lennar development. Barred Owls were all over the place we saw two and heard at least three more, at the Annex Paul B, Irvine, Mariel and I had crippling looks at a one for about twenty minutes. Gumbo Limbo trail hosted two more and Hidden Lake Road also had two Owls, it is always nice to hear them hoot "whooo-cooks-for-youuuu". A lunch stop at the Pinelands was incredible as we had two Bluebirds, a Towhee, Pine and Palm Warblers and a beautiful male Cardinal coming right up to us hopping around our picnic table. A hike from gate 4 led us through the pinelands and prairies where we saw a glimpse of a lifer butterfly, the Bartram's Hairstreak (thanks Roger Hammer). We also saw a couple of Faithful Beauty along with lots of wildflowers and native Orchids. It was a great day of birding, hiking, joking with friends and plain just having fun. South Florida birding is Awesome!!!

Nature is Awesome
