After several trips and hours of patient waiting, I finally located the screech owl at Green Cay.
I was scanning the opening on and off from 3 pm to 6 pm, waiting for the owl to peer out of the box. I had no results. I was then beginning to believe the pictures of the reputed screecher where "Photoshopped." ;)
A dozen people stopped by and asked me if I had seen the owl today. Some even showed me the pictures they had taken of it. All of the photographs had the owl posed with its head looking quizzically out of its box.
Near sunset a couple walked up, again claiming to have seen the animal quite a few times within the last few days. We were chatting, when the husband remarked that it looked as though there was an owl ensconced in the small slash pine in front of us. It was so close I didn't need any optics to identify it; its tiny ear tufts gave it away. The creature was literally hiding in plain sight, fluffed up, and nestled cryptically in the pine needles.
I am now wondering if the reason this owl was outside on such a cold day, if perhaps there are now two owls! If so, things may get very interesting very soon.
