I've been frequenting the beach at 75th street these past few days looking for storm petrels. None
to be found, but there have been large flocks of frigate birds and dozens of brown boobies coming in
relatively close. There have also been Sterna terns.
Saturday there was a Common, but this evening a pair
flew by at the surf line. The breast and belly were dark gray, almost as dark as the mantle. The upper wings were uniformly shaded, except for being a bit lighter toward the rear. There were no dark primaries. The beak was relatively short, and dark. The hindparts were snowy white. I've seen lots of Arctic terns, and these sure looked like a pair. The beach bears watching, even this far south.
