If you spend any time gardening in southern Florida you'll likely encounter southern ringneck snakes on occasion. Also, if you dig around in mulch or loose soil you'll also likely encounter an exotic species called the Braminy blind snake (Ramphotyphlops bramina). They're typically about 3" long, the diameter of pencil lead, and are either shiny black or bluish-gray. They're parthenogenetic too, meaning they're all females that produce young without fertilization.
I removed a 26" eastern coral snake from my yard back in October. It's now crawling around Castellow Hammock somewhere.
