You guys who regularly take your fully-feathered parrots outside are really lucky. My Mitred Conure, who I was rehabbing, waiting for his previously clipped primaries to molt in, went out with me a few weeks ago, just to get the groceries out of the car. This bird, who had never been able to flutter more than a few feet took off, gained about ten feet of altitude and was gone. We found him the next day, but were unable to coax him back. By now, I'm sure a hawk or a cat has done its dirty work. It was like losing a child, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The lesson: never underestimate the power or desire for freedom of your flighted parrot. They are, after all, wild animals.
