13 birders braved the wind and the cold on Saturday. Arriving at Wakodahatchee, we were informed it was closed due to a photography class that apparently occurs the last Saturday of every January - so we rerouted everyone to Green Cay. There we had 10 Purple Gallinules and 6 Sora along with 2 striking male Harriers swooping over the wetlands. A Limpkin showed off his ungainly landing skills, there was a dirth of warblers, possibly due to the wind. Mostly Yellow-rumps, some Palms and 1 Common Yellow-throat. Pied-billed grebes were as cute as ever. Ducks included Blue-winged teal, one striking male Green-winged teal, a Shoveler and Mottleds. A couple of Snipe were also a treat. The wading birds were plentiful, some in their breeding plumage. A few Purple Martins were staking out their homes. At Okeeheelee we had two of our three target birds, Painted buntings and a Sandhill Crane. Wood ducks were not to be found. Hootie the Screech Owl was present in the nature center. After a quick lunch, we then decided to go back to Wakodahatchee which re-opened at noon. The place was absolutely packed. We added nesting Great Blue Herons to the day list which we had not seen yet as well a humongous gator. There was a very loud Limpkin which we never saw although it seemed real close. If I forgot anything, feel free to add. Thanks everyone for coming!
